Buxkemper announces bid for Levelland Mayor

Breann Buxkemper, current city council member for District C, has announced her bid for the mayor of Levelland.

Buxkemper became a city council member in May 2018. She is in her third term serving the City of Levelland.

A third generation Levelland native, she and her husband Matt Buxkemper, chose Levelland as their home and the perfect place to raise their children. They have a daughter, Mattie, and a son, Mark, both students at Levelland High School.

Both Breann and her husband Matt are dedicated to being involved in Levelland to set an example for their children on the importance of civil involvement. In addition to city council, Breann is also involved with the South Plains College Gala Auction committee, committees through the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, and the Hockley County Junior Livestock Show Association. Matt serves as a board member for the Levelland ISD Board of Trustees.

Breann said she is dedicated to making Levelland the best possible place to live and raise a family.

I love Levelland and am extremely passionate about Levelland. I love serving, it is not perfect, and it is not easy, but I love it.

Breann said her experience and nearly six years serving as a city council member gives her a unique perspective into what Levelland needs moving forward, as well as an ear to the community to know what residents want in the place they choose to call home.

I have an understanding of the current situation in Levelland and Hockley County for what we need. I believe I have the relationships already established to aid in that position.

Choosing to run for mayor was not an easy decision, but after much thought and prayer, she and her family decided it was what Breann needed to do right now: to do what is best for Levelland.

I believe we are at a tipping point. Levelland is growing, Lubbock is growing. If we are going to capitalize on that, we need affordable housing, we need infrastructure.

But, none of these things come without effective leadership and communication at the city level. Breann has been present for the many changes in city leadership that have occurred over the past four years. Levelland recently hired a new city manager and is still looking to fill other important positions at city hall.

Breann said she believes consistency and stability are important for the city. She hopes that as mayor, she can help to right the course for the city and get the community on the road to progress.

I want to work with city management, I do not want to be divisive. I believe we have good leadership in place and we can work hand in hand with those department heads and create real change in Levelland.

While she supports city leadership and wants to see Levelland succeed, she does believe in accountability. Breann says that accountability is a cornerstone for her own life and she expects others to be held to the same standard.

Everyone can always be better. We can serve the citizens better and try to grow and use that forward momentum.

Buxkemper will be on the ballot for the May Fourth general election. Early voting will begin April 22 and run through April 30. All early voting will be held at the Hockley County Elections Office, located at 911 Austin Street.
